Meeting at Twyning Village Hall GL20 6BZ
Times 7.45pm-10.00pm
"This month we mustered 14 for our "parade" at the Twyning Village Hall.
On the OO9 front we were treated to another two examples of David Churchill's magic with motive power. One was a partly completed brass kit, of diesel outline, for his own use and the other a totally rehabilitated steam loco that had been purchased from the Society Sales Stand by another of our Group members. Needless to say they ran like a Swiss sowing machine.
Another of our ever-present members, Mark Hughes, brought along the pre-production pewter casting of the latest model in his extensive catalogue. This particular item is the Manchester Metrolink tram; the casting was incredibly crisp and the level of detail has to be seen to be believed. Mark was also able to show us, via his laptop, the results of his recent visit to the Amberley Chalk Pits Museum. It is a long time since I've seen a presentation on this Site and it was good to see the progress that has been made in getting the most valuable historic items under cover.
This month Harvey Faulkner-Aston's "workshop" was concentrated on the production of trees; the tall straight conifers that populate American logging layouts. For the basic trunk he was using Bar-B-Q skewers and, having taken the shine off the surface, he was using acrylic inks, from Windsor & Newton, as the initial staining coat. In addition he had for sale a range of scale timber that originates from the appropriately named "North Eastern Scale Lumber Co." based in the USA.
As a preview of what we can expect for our July meeting Malcolm Morgan brought along a professionally produced DVD of his Leigh Valley Light Railway; a 32 mm live steam garden layout. For the most part the camera was set to give the impression that you were actually standing lineside at ground level. This technique gave a totally different dimension to what is a superb operation.
Malcolm lives in the Longlevens area of Gloucester and at our next meeting at Twyning, on 2 June, he will bring a handout showing full details of his Open Weekend including a location map. The dates for your Diary are 5 and 6 July and we are welcome on either day. If you cannot attend on 2 June Malcolm is happy to take telephone enquiries on 01452 506542.
Chris Ward (Redmarley) brought along another couple of his On30 buildings; this time around it was a double-fronted shop and light maintenance running shed.
Our visual presentations were completed by a video of modern operations on rural French metre gauge lines. These seem to be populated by an efficient type of railcar, providing a regular service to the community, but for the most part heavily underused.
Finally we are indebted to Chris Ward (Corse) for manning the refreshment hatch and for Bob Ayers freshly baked "Cheery" Cherry Cake which has become the signature item of our meetings.
If there are any more Narrow Gauge devotees out there who would like to swell our numbers details and directions to our Twyning venue can be obtained from Chris Ward ( Tel : 01531 650208 )."
